The BEST way to get exactly what you want in the art-world is to commission a piece for your space. It sounds pretty straight forward right? Explain the piece you want. The artist gets to work, and then you pick it up. Simple - right?
Avoid disappointment when commissioning your next piece of art. Whether it's for your home, community or business organisation, there are some key questions to ask your artist (and ones they should ask you) before the brush hits the canvas.
Questions to ask yourself -
Know what you do and don’t want.
Type of artwork -
Is it a mural, painting on a canvas etc
Will the artwork be for indoors or outdoors.
Is the artist right for the job/Is the style right for you -
Do some research, look at some already completed works, does the artist have a portfolio.
Is the commission work for private or commercial use -
Is it for your home, business or organisation.
Budget -
How much would you like to spend or get a quote.
Timeframe -
Do you have a deadline, a birthday or is the artist busy for the next few months.
Theme / Story -
Do you have a theme or story in mind.
Would you like to see a draft -
Before the commission begins would you like to see drafts of ideas.
Progress photos -
Do you want progress photos of the commission work.
Colours and detail -
Do you have a colour palette in mind or are you happy for the artist to suggest a palette.
How much detail do you want, (this will effect your price).
Size/shape -
Canvas size, measurements or a particular space for the artwork in mind.
Landscape or portrait -
Any preference.
Will the artist require a Deposit -
The artist will require a 50% deposit up front before starting the commission work.
Remember, the more information you can provide the better.
When you have answered your questions and are happy with your answers its time for your art journey to begin.
