Meet Our Artist - ERICA BLANCH

What motivates you to create?

Finding time and returning to something that is just for me, whilst being a new mother is what really motivates me with my creative practices.

I truly believe life is better when we slow it right down, Art or anything practical/hands on such as gardening or cooking, can really help us to achieve that calm state.

Where do you find inspiration? Country! The bush, the trees, the mountains! The sunrises, sunsets, birds and the flowers! I go for my walks and take it all in, sometimes I take it with me to the canvas and bring it to life all over again.

What is your favourite medium/style? I'm always learning now ways of expressing and creating! I have previously enjoyed "etching" and printing. But Im now delving into making friends with acrylic paint and all of the surfaces that I can put a brush too.

What are you currently working on or finished? I am really inspired with my home Country, Gomeroi. Our mob originates from Coonabarabran, home of the Warrumbungles. I've been coming up with my own interpretations of these beautiful rock formations as well as working with water and colour to create the sandstone look. Stay tuned.

How long have you been creating art and what got you started?

I have always enjoyed art even as a little youngster. My Nan always encouraged me to keep at it. Life has taken many turns over the years and I have been on many different creative pursuits, for some reason Visual Arts was on the back burner. It really wasn't until a very long lock-down haul in Melbourne 2020 I lived with an artist who is now still one of my best mates, that really got me involved with it again. It really got me through one of the toughest periods of my life, and I vow to never put it down again!

Can you tells us bit about your background? I am of Gomeroi, Irish/European and Mexican decent. My mob comes from all different walks. My great grandfather on my Nans side was the creative wiz! My father says I remind him of his Pop.I was born on Wiradjuri country where I spent most of my childhood until we moved to Birpai.

I've been on a wild kind of walkabout for most of my young adult years, until I met my current partner which then led us to where we are today - Back on Birpai with a beautiful little son. My recent years have been filled with travel, learning and offering traditional "hands on healing" techniques. As well as music, good food, arts and really inspiring people. Learning where and who I come from culturally has been on the forefront, which has taken me on many pathways. Now I hope to slow it down some, and share who I am and my creations to the wider community.

Any major success? Previously running my own soul-led business. Breaking cycles of ancestral trauma. Giving birth to my Son.

Where do you see yourself in the future with your art? I have a vision of sharing these moments with wider community through art workshops and one on one Art Therapy sessions. I also hope to share my art in exhibition.
