Meet Our Artist - RACHEL CROSS

What motivates you?

Painting is my downtime, when I want to relax, I paint.

I get an idea and I love the journey that an artwork takes from a draft to the canvas. Wanting to see the end result motivates me.

Where do you find your inspiration?

My inspiration comes from all around me.

I am inspired by my family, growing up on a property in the bush, having a river running through the backyard, to now living on the beautiful Mid North Coast surrounded by beaches.

What is your favourite medium?

My favourite medium is acrylic paints but I am always experimenting with other mediums to give me ideas and learn new things.

What are you currently working on or finished?

I am currently working on artworks for an exhibition that I will be participating in at the Armidale Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place in October 2023.

How long have you been creating art and what got you started?

I have always had an interest in both arts and crafts. My daughters and I spend time painting, creating and sharing ideas, making costumes, drawing. It is something that we have shared and enjoyed together.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I worked in retail for about 15 years and decided I needed a lifestyle change, more of a work life, family balance, a job that was more community involved. I wanted to reconnect.

I then worked in a local Aboriginal Medical Service for 5 years, best decision ever, I loved being back in the community, the simple things of auntie bringing in fried scones and dampers, instant memories of my mum. I felt the old me emerging.

I finally had a normal Monday to Friday 9 to 5 job and had more time for my family and started painting as a hobby. I realised how much I enjoyed painting, this then led to me working in the Dunghutti Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery. My dream job, being surrounded by art, meeting the artists, chatting with different people, and being able to work on my paintings at work.

Any major success?

I think completing the "Passion to Profit" course at the Wauchope TAFE and finishing with the collective - Nyiirunba Djuyalbaa (Our Story Place) is an awesome success.

My most recent success, on Friday 18th August 2023 I received a Highly Commended for my artwork "Our Elders" (below). that I had entered into the 2023 Saltwater Freshwater art competition.
